A deliberate "identity hijack" from the 1970s. For nearly 70 years, the club was known as The Glaziers, reflecting the tradesmen who maintained the glass "Crystal Palace" exhibition building. Manager Malcolm Allison arrived in 1973 and wanted to transform the club's image from "dusty industrial" to "modern powerhouse." He stole the nickname and the red-and-blue kit design from the Portuguese giants Benfica.
