HAMMERS

Founded as Thames Ironworks FC, the players were mostly "riveters" and "boilersmiths." The "Hammers" refers specifically to the heavy riveting hammers used to drive hot metal bolts into the hulls of massive warships (like the HMS Warrior). The "Irons" part of the name is still used today to remind fans of the raw, iron-ore beginnings of the East End laborers who founded the team.
