RED DEVILS

 After the 1958 Munich Air Disaster, the team was known as the "Busby Babes," but manager Matt Busby felt that name sounded too vulnerable and youthful. He looked to the local Salford Rugby Club, who had toured France in the 1930s. The French press, stunned by the rugby team's aggression and red kits, dubbed them "Les Diables Rouges" (The Red Devils). Busby loved the "wicked" aura it projected and officially incorporated the devil onto the United crest in 1970.
