MAGPIES
A direct reference to the club’s world-famous black and white striped shirts, which mirror the distinct plumage of the magpie bird. The club didn't always wear stripes; they originally wore red. However, after a series of successful years in the 1890s following their move to St. James' Park, they adopted the black and white "uniform." The nickname "Magpies" naturally followed as fans and journalists looked for a shorthand to describe the team’s striking appearance.
